Introduction
Rechtlezer ("we", "our", or "the extension") is committed to protecting your privacy.
This privacy policy explains what data we collect and how we use it.
What Data We Collect
Website Content
When you visit a legal judgment page on uitspraken.rechtspraak.nl, Rechtlezer collects:
- ECLI identifiers (European Case Law Identifiers) - These are public
reference numbers for legal cases (e.g., "ECLI:NL:HR:2023:123")
Purpose: We send the ECLI to our API at rechtlezer.nl to generate an
enhanced table of contents and document structure for better readability.
Local Storage
The extension stores the following data locally on your device only:
- User interface preferences (e.g., theme settings)
- This data never leaves your device and is not transmitted to any server
What We Don't Collect
Rechtlezer does NOT collect:
- Personal information (name, email, phone number, etc.)
- Browsing history outside of rechtspraak.nl
- User behavior or tracking data
- Financial information
- Authentication credentials
- Any content from the legal documents themselves
How We Use Data
- ECLIs are used solely to fetch table of contents data from our API
- Local preferences are used only to customize your reading experience
- We do NOT sell, trade, or share any data with third parties
- We do NOT use data for advertising or profiling
Data Storage and Security
- ECLIs sent to our API are processed in real-time and not permanently stored with user identifiers
- Local preferences are stored in your browser's local storage using Chrome's standard storage API
- We use HTTPS encryption for all API communication
Your Rights
- You can clear all locally stored preferences at any time by removing the extension
- ECLI identifiers are public information and cannot be considered personal data
- No account is required, so there is no user profile to delete
Changes to Legal Documents
The legal judgments on rechtspraak.nl are public documents. Rechtlezer does not modify,
store, or transmit the content of these documents.
Third-Party Services
Rechtlezer communicates with:
- rechtspraak.nl - Where the legal judgments are hosted
- rechtlezer.nl - Our own API for generating enhanced document structure
Website Analytics
Our website (rechtlezer.nl) uses Umami, a privacy-focused, open-source analytics tool.
Umami collects anonymous, aggregated data about page visits without:
- Using cookies
- Collecting personal information
- Tracking users across websites
- Sharing data with third parties
We use this data solely to understand general usage patterns and improve the website.
The analytics service is self-hosted on our own infrastructure.
Note: The browser extension does NOT include any analytics or tracking.
